Basic Shotgun Shooting

The goal of the course is to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target. The course is based on objectives and each student must accomplish the learning objectives before proceeding to more complex tasks. The course consist of five course lessons:

Lesson 1: Shotgun Knowledge and Safe Handling.
The student be able in this lesson to identify the principal parts of a shotgun and action
types and demonstrate how they function.


Lesson 2: Ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting.
Here you will be able to identify ammunition components and their function. Further you
will be able to identify the proper ammunition and its intended use.


Lesson 3: Firing the First Shots.
As a result of this training experience, participants should be able to:
1) Demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and attitude necessary to safely shoot a shotgun on
a range.
2) Shoot a moving target using the five fundamentals of shotgun shooting.
3) Identify the materials needed to clean a shotgun and clean a shotgun safely.


Lesson 4: Shotgun and Shooting Skills Practical Exercise.
As a result of this training experience participants should be able to demonstrate the NRA
Shotgun Qualification Program, and show progress in refining basic shotgun skills and
earning the Pro-Marksman Award.


Lesson 5: Shotgun Games and Activities.
Participants should be able to identify several ways to pursue shotgun shooting activities
after the course. Identify criteria for selecting a shotgun. Identify various shooting
organizations and how to become involved with them.
